The Maremma
The history of the Maremma region dates way back in time and is one of struggle, with its land being reclaimed from the marshland and malaria and shaped by immigration. Today the region is scattered with farmland, woods, and unchanged little medieval villages, of which Capalbio is a splendid example.
One of the main areas of activity is tourism, together with agriculture. Here you’ll find clean water and long beaches protected by sand dunes and the Mediterranean maquis scrubland. Within a 30-35 km radius, you can visit various historical and archaeological sites tracing humans’ presence in the area, from the Etruscans to the Romans, then the Aldobrandeschi, the Orsini, the Medici, and the Lorena families.
Quaint historic villages like Pitigliano, Sovana, Sorano and Scansano are just a 30-40 minute drive away. With its 37°C spring water, Saturnia is a relaxing place to bathe all year round. The region’s nature is all around you and is protected in its parks and nature reserves, like the Uccellina Park, the Diaccia Botrona reserve and the WWF Oases of Orbetello and Lake Burano.
And for a magical, fantastical experience, a visit to the Tarot Garden is a must!
